Hi, my name is Marco.
From first grade to my freshman year of high school an event between these years have forever changed my life. This event has such a huge impact on me that it made me go to a tech center for my last two years of high school. I believe that the event is F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics. Although being a part of the F.I.R.S.T. Robotics program has had a huge influence on my life, being a part of the robotics program was only half the story. Watching movies in general also had a big influence on me like Jurassic Park, Batman Begins, or some of the movies that Ray Harryhausen worked on. Some of these movies have given me ideas of what I wanted to be when I grew up to adult hood.
By the time I was in third grade, my cousins from Connecticut were a part of a program that allowed high school students to come together and build a robot to do certain tasks (since the competition each year would change). I was really interested in the program since I was a young kid and heard that a group of students along with adult mentors could build a robot. The robots weren’t anything like I thought they were going to be since I watched a lot of science fiction movies like Lost in Space and the Star Wars movies. So from the fourth grade to the eighth grade, I went down to multiple robotic competitions in Connecticut to visit my family members that were a part of the team. As time went on, my cousins that were a part of the robotics team started to leave for college. This meant that I couldn’t go to anymore robotic competitions down in Connecticut to visit my cousins.
During my time being in the eighth grade, my mother discovered that there was going to be a F.I.R.S.T. Robotics team for schools of Rutland County. When she told me that there was going to be a Vermont robotics team, I didn’t know what to think since the team itself was going to be made up of students from other schools from Rutland County. Knowing that the team was going to be made up of students from other schools, I was a little nervous at first. When my mother and I went to the very first meeting, I saw people that I knew from my school and I hung out with them. As the first few meetings went, most of the students from each school were in their own groups. Over the course of the build season, each group of students started to become one big group. As one of my instructors said “You all started out as a flock of chickens, then you became a flock of geese.” The bonds between the members of the team and I grew as we built the robots for each year of F.I.R.S.T. Robotics.
During my time on the team, I had a lot of positions and did a lot of different tasks. I spent a total of 4 years of the team from my freshmen year to my senior year of high school. For most of those years I was a part of the human resources division of the team. When I was a part of the human resources division of the robotics team for my first two years on the team. One of my friends and I along were in charge of makings the uniforms, the buttons, and the logo with help from other members of the team. During my sophomore year of high school, I remember getting a camera for Christmas because I wanted a camera to take a lot of pictures of the team building the robot. I just remember taking a lot of pictures and videos of the team either building the robot or goofing off. Near the end of my sophomore year of high school, my dad wanted me to think ahead about my future when I was done with college. He basically wanted me to go to a tech center for my junior and senior years of high school since that’s what he did during his junior and senior years of high school.
Going to the tech center itself in a way was like the robotics program all over again. The tech center itself was open to students form other high schools. Like joining robotics before, I again was a little nervous since I was going to a place that allowed other students from other high schools to attend. However the difference between this and robotics was that robotics was an after school program. Going to this tech center for me was different since I was going there 7 days of the week. I then thought about my experiences from robotics and thought that meeting people from different schools around Rutland County wasn’t going to be that bad. Before I went to the tech center, I wanted to see what types of programs that tech center had to offer. Remembering my experiences from robotics, I wasn’t really big on the being a grease monkey. So any auto mechanic programs were out of the question. Working on computer boards or programs for the robot wasn’t my cup of tea either so computer tech was out of the question. As I went through each program, the only programs that I wanted to choose between were art related. However I had to choose between Digital Arts or Video Production. I just remember video production being really fun so I decided to join the program.
I’m not really sure as to why the video production program stood out to me the most. However now that I think about it, I believe that the main reason for me being in the video production major is mainly due to my love of movies and all the times I took pictures and videos during robotics. Now that I think about it from the first grade to my sophomore year of high school, I remember watching a lot of movies and these made me go through various phases of what I wanted to be when I became an adult. During the first grade, all I ever wanted was to either become a paleontologist or a scientist because of Jurassic Park. The main reason for wanting to become a paleontologist or a scientist was mainly due to my love of dinosaurs as a kid or see if I could bring the dinosaurs back from the dead. Many years later when I was in middle school, I than realized that maybe becoming a paleontologist was going to be too much work digging up dinosaur bones. Becoming a scientist was going to a pain since science wasn’t my cup of tea and even if I did became a scientist; we don’t have the technology to bring back dinosaurs. Even If we did have the technology to bring back dinosaurs, there might be a situation similar to the one that happens in Jurassic Park where the dinosaurs go on a rampage.
A few other examples of movies that inspired my career path came in many different job occupations. For example I wanted to become a psychologist because of Batman Begins villain Scarecrow since he is of my favorite Batman villains from both the comics and animated TV show. Other jobs that I wanted to be ranged from being a pirate (Pirates of the Caribbean), a federal agent (N.C.I.S.), a ninja (The Wolverine), and a witch doctor (Princess and the Frog). The more I started to think of these ridiculous ideas, the more I realized that they all came from either movies or the television. Another reason for me for being in the video production major was because of the stop motion model animator Ray Harryhausen since he created a lot of films that I grew up on from Jason and the Argonauts, to The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. It turns out that many film makers like Peter Jackson, James Cameron, and Steven Spielberg were all inspired by the films Ray Harryhausen worked on that made them go into the film making business.
When the time came for me to go to college, I didn’t know where to start. This much I knew about myself. I wanted to be in a college in Vermont but a college that had some form of video production program in it. During my senior year of high school, I had a general idea of what colleges I wanted to go to. During that fall, my dad and I visited each college to see what each college had to offer. The colleges that I wanted to go to were either Castleton State College or Lyndon State College. Between the two colleges I decided to go to LSC for a few reasons. The main reason was that my older sister was going to Lyndon and I figured that I could get rides from her during our vacations or help on homework that I may have a problem with. Another reason for going to LSC was because a group of friends of mine from the tech center were also going to LSC. When it came to finding out what college accepted me, Castleton denied my request for going to their college. Lyndon on the other hand didn’t. Between Castleton and Lyndon, I enjoyed that atmosphere of Lyndon a lot better than Castleton and LSC had a better video production program. From the time I graduated high school, I wasn’t really excited to go to college since I didn’t know what to expect from college since my sister told me that college was like high school but harder. But I listened to my sister’s advice and I managed to survive my first few years of college.
From the time I started college; I have made a lot of new friends here and had tons of fun with them. Now it has been a few years after high school graduation for me and man has time flies by really fast. As the colleges semesters come and gone, my friends and I did a lot of things from working on homework together, playing poker, watch movies, watching anime, going to a live Rocky Horror Picture Show performance, going to the Vermont anime convention, and spending time with a friend of ours for the weekend and going to see movies like Avengers: Age of Ultron. God time does fly by when both you and the people you are close to are having fun.
