With this years Comic Con just happening this past weekend. A good amount of movie trailers shown at this years Comic Con. So here are my general thought on each trailer.
Thoughts: Meh. Honestly the only thing that stood out about the Glass trailer was the soundtrack because the music playing in the Glass trailer is the same music that played in the first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence. Overall the only thing I took away from the trailer was the music and not much else. Although I wasn’t really looking forward to Glass since I wasn’t really a big fan of the other two installments in the Eastrail 177 Trilogy in the first place.
Thoughts: Looks terrible. Like the impression that I get from this trailer is that some Zack Snyder fanboy looked at Zack Snyder’s style of film making that he did for the first few installments of the DCEU (like Man of Steel and BVS:DOJ) thinking those movies were masterpieces and set out to copy that style. Not realizing how misguided Zack Snyder’s film making and the amount of creative control WB/DC had over those movies. Overall the show looks like someone who’s trying to inmate Zack Snyder’s style of film making and and not understanding why it’s bad.
Thoughts: It looks cute and really different from another move set withing the DCEU in the sense of it’s tone and style. Like the first three DCEU movies (Man of Steel, BVS:DOJ, and Suicide Squad) are trying to be dark and gritty but failing at it. Wonder Woman and Justice League on the other hand are a step in the right direction looking dark but being fun. SHAZAM on the other hand in re-guards to it’s tone just feels really fun and campy. I also get Spider-Man: Homecoming type of vibes of this since this is the first movie within the DCEU to focus on a superhero that is a kid and not an adult. Also the trailer sold an idea for a superhero that I found to be rather silly but make it look legit in a fun kind of way. However the only problem that I have with the trailer is the production values because I don’t really get a sense that this movie takes place in the DCEU. It almost feels like WB and DC told the producers over at CW to make a TV made movie focused on SHAZAM that takes place in the CW tv shows like Arrow, The Flash, and Legends or Tomorrow but somehow ended up getting a theatrical release. Overall it looks like an action packed version of the Tom Hanks movie BIG but feels more like it’s apart of the Arrowverse than the DCEU.
Thoughts: Actually before I begin to talk about the Aquaman trailer. I want to talk about the MARVEL movie Thor because when the first Thor movie was announced. I was really hyped for the movie. Like the idea of having a MARVEL movie focused on Thor sounded amazing and had a lot of potential to be unique for a MARVEL movie. Having a movie focused on the Norse god of thunder, have it be a fantasy adventure, explore the nine realms, encounter different cultures and monsters from Norse mythology. Instead we get a fish out of water story set on earth. Granted I do like the first Thor movie but I feel that it was a missed opportunity on MARVEL’s end. I almost get the feeling that MARVEL back in the day was ashamed to make a movie about the God of Thunder because of how silly the idea sounded. Aquaman on the other hand looks like that kind of movie that I wanted the first Thor movie to be where it will be a fantasy adventure in which he will explore the seven seas, encounter different cultures and sea monsters from the Aquaman mythology. Also out of the DCEU movies, this is what the other DCEU movies should of been like in the first place in the sense of tone and visuals. Also speaking of tone, unlike the SHAZAM movie which feels more like a product done by the producers of the CW tv shows, Aquaman actually looks like it takes place in the DCEU and for a solo movie focusing on Aquaman. It looks really epic in scope. Overall Aquaman looks like the Thor movie that I wanted to see back in the day.
Godzilla: King Of The Monsters
Thoughts: Wow just wow. Out of any of the trailers from this past years Comic Con. This is the trailer that I watched the most and for good reason. The trailer is just a spectacle to watch. It also looks like WB and Legendary learned their lesson from the 2014 Godzilla movie in terms of its advertising and movie. With the ads for the 2014 movie, they either teased the monsters or didn’t show them at all. This trailer shows us the monsters. Godzilla is featured the most, while we are shown brief glimpses of both Mothra and Rodan. King Ghidorah however is the one that is teased the most and I’m okay with that because I feel that if they did show all of King Ghidorah, WB and Legendary would of played it’s best hand way too soon. It also looks like there going to be a good balance between the amount of screen time the humans and monsters get for this movie since the 2014 Godzilla movie was more focused more on the humans than the monsters. The cinematography is shot really well and just looks beautiful. The music in the trailer is very mystical and operatic. The movie also looks really apocalyptic as hell with the level of destruction presented with the monster rampages. I feel that Michael Dougherty is like the Guillermo del Toro of the MonsterVerse in that sense of the director himself is a big fan of giant monster movies who wants to make a love letter to other giant monster fans by making this movie. Although I do have one problem with Godzilla: King of the Monsters. This movie looks apocalyptic as fuck. How in the hell is Godzilla vs. Kong going to top this movie cause by the looks of it. Kong’s gonna need a massive steroid injection to fight Godzilla after this movie. Overall Godzilla: King of the Monsters looks more like a traditional Godzilla movie that we should of gotten in the first place and because of that, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is already my most anticipated movie for 2019.
